Award-winning comedy-drama The End of the F***ing World has been confirmed for a second series.
The first series ended on a cliff-hanger as would-be psychopath and murderer James made a break for it across an empty beach. As the screen went dark a shot rang out.
Since then, writer Charlie Covell has kept her cards close to her chest on rumours of a second series, telling the RTS earlier this year, “There’s a world in which it ends [at a single series] and that’s something I love and feel very proud of, and then there’s a world in which we carry on and that takes us somewhere new. Both are possibilities."
However, at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, the series was confirmed to make a return.
Based on a graphic novel of the same name, the series focused on a road trip by two teens: psychopathic James (Alex Lawther, Black Mirror) and loudmouth rebel Alyssa (Jessica Barden, The Lobster).
Their antics attract the attention of two fairly incompatible police detectives, played by Bafta-winning Wunmi Mosaku (Damilola Our Loved Boy) and Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones).
Writer Charlie Covell commented, “I’m completely thrilled that we’re going again and I’m delighted to be back working with such a great team."
Speaking with RTS, Covell described the process of writing for such unusual characters, “It’s trying to get that balance of it being deadpan and wry without being cold and arch…you’re trying to get a human warmth and reality in this heightened world.”
The series will be produced by Clerkenwell Films and Dominic Buchanan Productions. Details of filming dates will be announced at a later date.
