Gaming makes up a significant portion of many media industries, including YouTube, Twitch and E-sports, but Gaming formats, are less frequent on Broadcast Television, even with formats like 'Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit’ (Dave), ‘Videogame Nation’ (Challenge) and 'Charlie Brooker's Gameswipe’ (BBC Four), which begs the question, why?
In this event, the relationship between Gaming and Television will be discussed, and the many themes surrounding these two mediums, as well as predictions of what the future may hold.
On the panel we have, Ellie Gibson (Chair), award-winning journalist, presenter, and stand-up comedian who specialises in Gaming and Technology, and is also the gaming expert on ‘Dara O Briain's Go 8 Bit’; Steve McNeil, Writer, Comedian and Streamer, Steve has frequently been a contributor and guest host on ‘Videogame Nation’; Sam Pamphilon, Actor, Writer, Comedian, and alike Steve, Sam is a Co-creator & Team Captain on ‘Dara O'Briain's Go 8 Bit’; Julia Hardy, Presenter, Technology Journalist, Vlogger and Host on BBC Radio 1’s 'The Gaming Show’ (BBC), Julia also previously hosted the television coverage for the 2014 BAFTA Games Awards.

Ellie Gibson - Journalist, Presenter, Comedian & Author - @elliegibson
Award-winning journalist, presenter, author, comedian and one-half of the comedy duo Scummy Mummies, Ellie has over 15 years experience of writing about video games. She has worked for Guinness World Records, The Guardian, Eurogamer and many more. She appears as the games expert on Dave's hit show Dara O Briain's Go 8 Bit, and hosts companion show Go 8 Bit DLC.
Ellie previously hosted BBC Technology show Tech Know, and presented Radio 4 documentary Virtually Famous. Other TV and radio appearances include The Apprentice: You're Fired, The Wright Stuff, Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, Woman's Hour and Broadcasting House.
She has hosted events for BAFTA Games, Sony PlayStation, English Heritage and Mumsnet. Together with fellow Scummy Mummy Helen Thorn, she hosts the UK's number one parenting podcast, and performs live comedy shows around the country. Their first book, Scummy Mummies, was published in March 2017.
Steve McNeil - Actor, Writer, Comedian & Streamer - @stevemcneil
Accomplished Actor, Writer, Comedian and Streamer, Steve is one-half of the comedy double act, McNeil and Pamphilon. From their collaborations they created four Edinburgh shows, one of which was the huge hit “Go 8-Bit’, which established the frameworks for “Dara O’Briain’s Go 8 Bit” (2016 - ), for which Steve is not only a Co-creator but also a Team Captain, and “Go 8 Bit DLC ” (2017 - ) on which he is co-host.
Steve’s expertise in Video Games led him to become a frequent contributor to shows such as Videogame Nation, Console Yourself and Sky News’ Swipe, and publications such as Time Out, Vice and Den of Geek.
He is also co-creator of the Guinness World Record-breaking live videogaming/comedy show WiFi Wars, which allows the entire audience to compete using their smartphones. This Christmas, they will be the first since Nikola Tesla in 1892 to present on two consecutive nights at the Royal Institution in Mayfair, where the show has its residency.
Prior to the above, Steve was part of the 2007 Perrier Award-winning Brendon Burns show “So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now?” (2008) in Edinburgh, the West End and Montreal.
Sam Pamphilon - Actor, Writer & Comedian - @SamPamphilon
Acclaimed Actor, Writer, Comedian and one-half of McNeil and Pamphilon, Sam is a Co-Creator of the “Go 8 Bit” format, Team Captain on “Dara O’Briain’s Go 8 Bit” (2016 - ) and Co-host on “Go 8 Bit DLC ” (2017 - ).
In frequent competition with fellow Team Captain Steve, Sam may not the most proficient Gamer, Sam still continuously gives a Steve a run for his money.
As an actor, Sam has worked on a numerous different productions, of varying genres and formats, from Short Films to Television Series, Sam having recently worked on “BBC 2's "The Agency" (2016) and ABC’s “Still Star-Crossed” (2017), appearing in a great many comedies and provided a great many laughs, having starred in the likes of “A Gert Lush Christmas” (2015) and “Josh” (2014).
Julia Hardy - Presenter, Technology Journalist & YouTuber - @itsJuliaHardy
An experienced Presenter (in both Television and Radio), Writer, Journalist, Public Speaker, YouTuber, and currently BBC Radio 1’s Video Games Presenter, Julia is a specialist in all things Video Games and Technology, having hosted Radio 1’s first ever Video Game themed Radio Show and previously taken the role as the go-to Tech expert on “Sky News’ Sunrise”.
Julia has also found great success in “Rockstar Gamers” (2014), a Radio One documentary Julia had produced, which looked to content creators who had made a career out of playing video games for a living, becoming one of the stations most popular programmes.
Outside of Video Games and Technology, Julia is most passionate about bringing awareness to the online abuse that women receive, and aims to support women getting into the Tech and Video Game industries, having been a speaker at TEDx talk “How Sexism Affects Us All” (2016), building awareness to the online abuse that women receive.
