Student awards ceremony takes place on 8th February at The Everyman Cinema, Bristol
NEXT GENERATION OF TALENT CELEBRATED WITH RTS STUDENT AWARDS
Just over 100 guests attended the Royal Television Society West of England Student Awards on Wednesday 8th February at The Everyman Cinema in Bristol to celebrate the best student talent in the region. The awards are for student television work that shows outstanding visual and aural creativity, a mastery of craft skills, innovation, initiative and story-telling. The University of the West of England triumphed on the evening, winning all the programme categories (Animation, Drama and Factual). The winning films in each category are then put forward for RTS national judging in March of this year.
A packed and buzzing audience of students enjoyed a keynote speech from TV presenter and local girl Naomi Wilkinson, who passed on advice on how to break into the TV industry. In an inspirational and fun address, Naomi showed the audience some of her favourite and most scary moments from CBBC’s Naomi’s Nightmares of Nature.
Nick Maddocks from Testimony Films and Zoe Brandon, RDF West Talent Manager, both judges for the awards, handed out the first award of the evening, the Factual award, to Christy Tattershall, Matt Pidala, Alex Handschuh, Edd Roberts, James Royall, at UWE
for ‘The Wall’. The judges noted that ‘the contributors were very strong and the interviews honest, the team had secured great access and it was professionally put together”. Craft awards were also handed over to The Wall for Editing and Sound. Plus, for a film that heightened awareness of refugees in Calais and for some stunning shots, with compelling and confident film making, there was a craft award for Camerawork for Beauty of a Stateless Mind, to Lutia Swann-Hutton, Tess O’Shea and Sam Mulvey from UWE.
Steve Harding-Hill from Aardman, one of the judges presented the Drama award to ‘an ambitious and mature film’, ‘One Sleepless Night’ by Johnny Lennox, Harvey Quirke, Owen Hemming-Brown and Jack Hayter from UWE. Plus in craft, to Jack Hayter for camerawork in this film and to Aleah Johnson from Gloucestershire College for her camerawork in ‘Brothers’.
The Animation award was presented by Duncan Fraser of A Productions, another judge. The winner was the very slick ‘Heist’ by Edward Leicester from UWE, with Oliver Roberts awarded for Sound and Music in this animation. Plus, Chris Reed for Sound in the Animation ‘Fall.’
Student guests then enjoyed drinks, nibbles and networking with industry execs from the RTS Bristol Committee and the student award judges.
