Pitch Battle (working title) will pit some of the nation’s best choirs against each other in a range of choral challenges. These include Pitch Perfect inspired ‘Riff Offs’, a soloists challenge and an a capella round.

Competing choirs will be drawn from a range of musical styles: including pop, rock, folk, gospel and even fishermen’s choirs.

The groups will be whittled down over five hour-long, heat episodes, leaving the strongest to compete in a live final.

Created by Karen Smith’s independent production company Tuesday’s Child, the show was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Kate Phillips, Controller, Entertainment Commissioning.

The commission was awarded to Tuesday's Child following a three-stage pitch process, to which 12 independent producers submitted proposals.

“After a divisive, depressing 2016, we’re bringing some humour and harmony to 2017 in a contemporary new format,” said Karen Smith, CEO of Tuesday’s Child.

Kate Phillips said: “There are millions of people in the UK of all ages and backgrounds who sing simply for the love of it and sense of community it creates. Tuesday’s Child’s excellent new format reflects this with shed loads of sass and spirit. We can’t wait to get started!”
