Monday

Flying to the Ends of the Earth

Channel 4

When Royal Marine Arthur Williams was paralysed in an accident seven years ago, he took up flying to rediscover his spirit of adventure.

In Flying to the Ends of the Earth, Williams takes us along for the ride, sharing some of the most spectacular views in the world that are best seen from the air.

This week he heads to Nepal to find out how small planes are transforming the nation’s way of life. He meets the air traffic controllers at Lukla, the world’s most dangerous airstrip and gateway to Everest, and finds our why families are risking death on the mountainsides to harvest a strange Himalayan sex fungus.

 

Tuesday

Are Our Kids Tough Enough? Chinese School

Amid a seemingly constant flurry of reports arguing that Chinese schools are better at churning out well-educated kids than those in Britain, five teachers from China take over the education of 50 Hampshire teenagers.

Over four weeks, the teachers will impose a tough regime, featuring long days and strict discipline.

At the end of the experiment, the Chinese and British education systems will go head to head as the whole year group sit exams to see which teaching style produces the best results.

 

Wednesday

The Great British Bake Off

The bakers are back! Make sure you have snacks at the ready as 12 budding bakers show what they’re made of as they aim to impress judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood with their cake-making skills.

This year’s bakers are a typically mixed group, from 29-year-old trainee anaesthetist Tamal who is already fighting off requests to bake friends’ wedding cakes, to body builder Ugne who likes to create healthy bakes.

 

Thursday

The Unbreakables: Life and Love on Disability Campus

Leaving home the first time can be a daunting and dizzying challenge for any young person. This is just as true for the students at National Star, a further education college for people with physical disabilities, acquired brain injuries and associated learning difficulties in Gloucestershire.

For the 170 students who start each September, it’s an exciting and challenging time.

As part of BBC Three's Defying the Label season, we see the ups and downs of student life at the college, from vodka shots and truth-or-dare to emotional visits home.

Channel 4 claims that this is the toughest general knowledge quiz on television, but they clearly haven’t been watching the baffling Only Connect over on BBC Two.

Nevertheless, the show is hardly a walk in the park for the fifteen celebrities fighting it out to win tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

This week sees host Adam Hills joined by stars including Michael Vaughan, Sally Phillips, Bill Oddie and Hugh Dennis.
