Awards 2005 Results
The presentation for the North East & The Border Centre, RTS AWARDS 2005 was made at the Lancastrian Suite, Gateshead on February 4th 2006, before a capacity audience, and reflected the wide range of television and media talent in the region.
Writing in the event programme, Centre Chair Graeme Thompson reflected on the fact that 30 years ago (when the North East & The Border Centre was founded) TV activity in the region was dominated by the three established broadcasters. Today, independent production companies, media schools, advertising agencies, post-production houses, satellite channel operators and computer graphics specialists are key players alongside the BBC and ITV. According to figures from North East Film & Media, television activity in the region has generated more than £8 million in the past 12 months.
Presenting the awards was Robson Green. Welcoming him to the platform, host for the evening, ITV News presenter Nicholas Owen, remarked how the region had seen him rise from a youth actor into an internationally recognised star — reinforced by the fact that just a few days earlier his Coastal Productions company had won the World Gold Medal for Drama at the New York Television Festival for Wire in the Blood.
After the presentation, Robson himself praised the high standard of films shown and said they revealed “life affirming and thought provoking tales”. He said the record number of entries — 166 — showed that “the creative talent from this region is growing, but more importantly it is active.”
