Youth leaders will debate issues affecting young people in the run up to the election

Channel 4 have teamed up with news network Shout Out UK to stream the first ever Youth Leaders Debate ahead of the general election on its All 4 digital hub.

The debate will see seven youth party leaders debate issues important to younger voters.

The announcement follows the launch of the channel's 'X' campaign, which aims to encourage under 25s to register and vote.

Tom Porter, Channel 4's News & Current Affairs Commissioning Editor said: "Young people often feel that their interests are ignored by political parties. We hope that by bringing the youth leaders together we can engage as many young people as possible on the issues that matter to them in this election and encourage them to vote."

The 'X' Campaign is the latest campaign by a broadcaster to connect with young voters.

Sky News' Stand Up Be Counted, which was nominated in the News Technology category at this year's RTS Television Journalism Awards, was set up to give 16 to 25 year-olds a place to "speak out and debate the issues that matter."

The project allows young people to contribute blog posts and videos, as well as reporting on election news and encouraging people to vote.

Meanwhile, the BBC's Generation 2015 scheme has brought together 200 young voters from across Britain to share their views on BBC programmes from Radio 1's Newsbeat to the BBC News at Ten.

With an estimated turnout of just 44% among 18 to 24 year-olds in the 2010 general election, broadcasters are asking what's stopping the younger generation heading to the ballot box and encouraging them to do so.

The Youth Leaders Debate will stream on All 4 on Monday 28th April from 8pm.
