Online developments will help streamline the BBC's outside broadcasting

Today's digital technology will enable the BBC to do more with less according to Matthew Postgate, the corporation's Chief Technology Officer.

Writing in his blog, Postgate outlined plans for a more flexible and efficient BBC Engineering that will further streamline the BBC's finances.

Highlighting that technical innovation has enabled much of the £1.1 billion in savings the corporation has made since 2007, he hopes to save another £90 million over the next two years through a digital transition.

Moreover, he hopes that by partnering with editorial teams, the BBC's engineering software can better support the specific needs of BBC platforms in the digital age.

Using Glastonbury festival as an example, Postgate hopes harnessing the power of the internet could reduce a complex and expensive broadcast operation to just one production vehicle in the future.

Meanwhile, the Royal Television Society this week announced the opening of applications for its Young Technologist of the Year award, which showcases television's newest technology talent. To find out more, follow this link.
