Find out more about his new biography written by his son, Wynn Wheldon.
Former managing director of the BBC and RTS President, the late Sir Huw Wheldon, is the focus of a new biography by his son Wynn.
The book, which is currently being crowd funded on the site unbound.co.uk, looks at Wheldon’s childhood as well as his experience in World War II before working with the Arts Council and then the BBC.
Wheldon was seen by many as a driver of change within the BBC as it moved its focus from radio to television. This period in the late 1960s and early 1970s was described as the ‘Golden Age’ of TV.
Programmes such as Civilization, Alistair Cooke’s America, The Ascent of Man, Steptoe and Son, Till Death Us Do Part and Dad’s Army all came about from 1968 to 1976 while Wheldon ran BBC television.
The book also covers the great impact the war had on shaping Wheldon’s personality. The Military Cross was awarded to him on D-Day, which was also his first day of combat.
