Join us at The Midlands Arts Centre on Tuesday 10th September for the premiere screening of Joan.
Inspired by the London jewel thief, Joan Hannington and events from her life, Joan is an exhilarating and emotional new six-part series created and written by the acclaimed screenwriter Anna Symon (The Essex Serpent, Mrs Wilson) and directed by BAFTA award-winner Richard Laxton (Rain Dogs, The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe, Mrs Wilson).
Set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1980s – an era known for its bold fashion trends, iconic music, and cultural shifts, the series opens with Joan, a fiery and uncompromising woman in her twenties who is deeply scarred and vulnerable. She is a devoted mother to her six-year-old daughter, Kelly, but is trapped in a disastrous relationship with a violent criminal named Gary. When Gary goes on the run, Joan seizes the opportunity to create a new life for herself and her daughter.
Adopting new identities and making new acquaintances along the way, Joan becomes a masterful jewel thief. She embarks on a thrilling, high-stakes journey that challenges her every limit, driven by her desire to care for her daughter and create a secure home for them both.
Following the screening our host, Suzanne Virdee, will be joined on stage by Creator, Writer and Executive Producer Anna Symon, Director and Executive Producer Richard Laxton, Producer and Executive Producer Ruth Kenley-Letts and Production Designer Lucienne Suren who will give us a unique insight into bringing Joan to life.
The screening will start at 6.15pm prompt and we anticipate the event drawing to a close by 8.30pm.
