As filming begins in Liverpool and Spain for the BBC’s new gangland drama, This City is Ours, the broadcaster has announced the cast.

Stephen Butchard has written a “sharp, fast-paced and brilliantly observed” series, says Executive Producer Andy Harries of Left Bank Pictures. Across eight parts, it follows Michael Kavanagh, played by James Nelson-Joyce (Bird), who has spent his entire life flooding the streets of Liverpool with cocaine from Columbia.

Michael works for a gang headed by his friend Ronnie Phelan, played by RTS Award-winner Sean Bean (Time). The drug baron is hinting at retirement, but Michael is also considering a future far away from the life of organised crime, having fallen in love with Diana Williams (Hannah Onslow).

While a missing shipment signals an incoming attack, Ronnie’s son Jamie (Jack McMullen) decides he wants to inherit the family business, and to ‘fire’ Michael in the process.

All roads lead to a brutal power struggle with the lives of loved ones on the line.

Nelson-Joyce says: "It's an absolute honour to be a part of this exciting show. I knew from reading the first episode that I had to take on this compelling story of crime, loyalty and above all, love.”

Also on the cast are Julie Graham will play Elaine, matriarch of the Phelan family alongside her husband Ronnie. Laura Aikman will star as Rachel Duffy, Kevin Harvey as Bobby Duffy, Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Cheryl Crawford, Mike Noble as Banksey, Bobby Schofield as Bonehead, Darci Shaw as Melissa Phelan, and Stephen Walters as Davy Crawford.

Saul Dibb, who directed the RTS Award-winning, compassionate true crime hit The Sixth Commandment, will direct all eight parts.

Harries added: “This City is Ours is going to blow the bloody doors off.”
