Shot in the style of a fly on-the-wall documentary, Suspects is unscripted, with the cast devising their own dialogue based on a detailed plot description - it is Channel 5's first original drama commission in over eight years. This compelling RTS event explores this ground-breaking series, to discover how the first improvised drama on British TV was brought to our screens, and reveals some of the new production techniques that were inspired by investigating the German TV market.

The current episodes transmitted in January, and are available on Demand5

Paul Marquess began his successful and prolific career as a Storyliner for Coronation Street. He went on to develop and produce Drama for Granada TV, and was Series Producer on Brookside. During this time he conceived the idea for Footballers’ Wives. He was Executive Producer on The Bill, and earned a BAFTA, and a Rose d’or nomination. Paul was Head of Drama at Talkback Thames, and later Executive Producer on Channel 5’s Family Affairs for which he won best Storyline at The British Soap Awards in 2005. He was Series Producer on Hollyoaks, and created The Bill spin off series MIT: Murder Investigation Team. He created Police procedural Crime Stories which cast a real ex-policewoman in a leading role. The series was made by his new production company, New Street, with its radical approach to Drama Production. In 2013 Channel 5 commissioned New Street to produce the channel's first original drama for eight years: building on the drama/documentary hybrid format Suspects was filmed in a less obtrusive, fly-on-the wall, documentary style.
