The Greatest Snowman

While this month’s snow may have all cleared up across the UK, five celebrities find themselves in a winter wonderland for the ultimate festive competition: snowman building.

The competition will see the celebrities create snow sculptures, carve Christmas gifts and build snow castles to impress judges, sculptor and artist Taslim Martin and Swedish sculpting sisters Sara and Emilie Steele.

The celebrities ready show off their snow sculpting skills include choirmaster Gareth Malone, Gemma Collins, presenter Melvin Odoom, actor Joe Thomas and DJ and presenter Yinka Bokinni.

Sue Perkins will return as host and Changing Rooms royalty Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen will be on hand to give tips to competitors as they create their masterpieces…before they melt.

Detectorists

BBC Two, 9pm

Metal-detecting enthusiasts Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) are back for a full-length one-off special, five years on from series three.

The series three finale saw the pair finally get their break as they find their stolen gold (albeit from a slightly less intimidating thief than expected). Despite striking gold, Andy and Lance are back riffling through bushes and mud with their metal detectors as it’s revealed The Danebury Metal Detecting Club is in danger of losing their beloved scout hall after losing out on a big finder’s fee.

When a mysterious relic is found, Lance makes a decision that puts his friendship with Andy and the future of the DMDC in danger.

The Repair Shop

BBC One, 8pm

The Repair Shop is back to warm hearts for a special festive episode, with some Christmas gems after some much-needed restoration.

Jay Blades and the team will attempt to restore a sentimental family Christmas tree that’s seen better days and a decrepit trombone that is a lasting memory of a lost father.

Elsewhere, Mark Stuckey will put his electrical skills to the test as he brings an old projector back to life, and Will Kirk and Dominic Chinea help to restore a family’s home bar from the 1960s.

Only Connect/Christmas University Challenge

BBC Two, 8pm/8.30pm

Victoria Coren Mitchell takes two teams through the usual paces for a mystery edition of the famously tricky quiz show.

The Only Connect teams will have to be vigilant and find all the clues to win, as Inspector Morse superfans The Endeavours take on devoted Sherlock Holmes fans The Whodunits.

Straight after the episode, Jeremy Paxman questions the UCL and Aberdeen teams in the penultimate University Challenge episode of the year.

The Big Fat Quiz of the Year

Channel 4, 9pm

Jimmy Carr is back to host the annual quiz round up for another year.

Stephen Merchant, Katherine Ryan, Maisie Adam, Richard Ayoade, Rose Matafeo and Jonathan Ross will all put their 2022 trivia to the test.

The Mitchell Brook Primary School will return with another impressive performance of a 2022 moment, as well as celebrity question setter Charles Dance.
