For the prestigious awards presented at the discretion of the RTS, the RTS Special Award went to Working Title TV’s Head of Drama Surian Fletcher-Jones for building a slate of critically acclaimed television series that have broken new ground, championed diverse voices and created meaningful impact on global audiences. For 2022, the RTS Outstanding Contribution Award was presented to Claire Popplewell and the BBC Studios Events Team for harnessing the power of live television to bring people together to witness some of the most important events in history.

This small but impressive team set up and helped deliver this live event in just three and a half weeks with little funding. Their ambition and determination to raise as much money as possible, with every pound going to the appeal, kept them going against all odds - to find venues, hire crews, book facilities is all in a day’s work for production management but due to the circumstances this team found themselves doing music clearance, ticket pricing, sponsor liaison, accreditation, security and at one point helping find 400 live sunflowers for the staging. An amazing team effort for this unique event which raised £13.4m.”

WINNER – Surian Fletcher-Jones
RTS Special Award
“This year’s RTS Special Award goes to someone who has built a slate of critically acclaimed television series that have broken new ground, championed diverse voices, created meaningful impact on global audiences and have been celebrated by the industry.
We Are Lady Parts, which was created, written and directed by Nida Manzoor, captured the hearts and minds of many as an irreverent comedy about an all-female Muslim punk band. Certified 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and heralded by critics for its uncompromised originality, the series was nominated for 9 RTS awards and won 5 for Editing, Make Up Design, Production Design, Comedy Performance and Writer. We Are Lady Parts also won a prestigious Peabody Award and picked up wins at the BAFTA Awards and Rockie Awards.
Our recipient was also the Executive Producer on the BBC hit adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s best-selling memoir Everything I Know About Love which has been described by critics as “warm, funny and wincingly accurate” (The Times). Their passion for telling authentic and daring stories is evident throughout their work and her mission to discover and nurture diverse voices permeates everything she creates.”
RTS Outstanding Contribution Award
WINNER – Claire Popplewell and the BBC Studios Events Team
“This year’s RTS Outstanding Contribution Award goes to a team and its inspirational leader, who harnessed the great power of live television to bring people together to witness some of the most important events in history.
Responsible for the planning and execution of all royal, ceremonial and commemorative programming, they have delivered global events such as Live 8, the funeral of Nelson Mandela, the international broadcast of the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as other events including: World War One Remembered: Passchendaele and most recently Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, a nine-hour event, with 213 cameras, which was broadcast to more the 200 countries.
The team is headed by a brilliant Creative Director whose CV reads like a list of some of the most important events of the 20th and 21st centuries.
It is highly complicated Outside Broadcast coverage. There are no second takes, resulting in coverage of the absolute highest craft and standard, that is often described as “flawless” and “Public Service Broadcasting at its very best”.
In the year that the BBC turns 100 this team and its remarkable leader - though they haven’t been at the BBC quite that long - are undoubtedly fitting and extremely deserving winners of the RTS Outstanding Contribution Award. The winners are Claire Popplewell and the BBC Studios Events Team."
