Joel Collins is a production designer for television drama, feature films and commercials. In 2007 he founded Painting Practice  https://paintingpractice.com/ with Dan May, a company that combines concept design and visual effects . A production designer for Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror between 2011-2017, he won a BAFTA for Special, Visual and Graphic Effects in 2018. Joel has worked with directors Tom Hooper, Otto Bathurst, Joe Wright and Jodie Foster and collaborated with Hammer and Tongs and the director Garth Jennings on Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and (the brilliant) Son of Rambow.

He is currently production designer on His Dark Materials for BBC One and HBO, which is shooting season 3 at Wolf Studios, near Cardiff.

Joel’s talk will focus on the importance of ideation and design in film and television, with specific examples from his portfolio, including His Dark Materials.
