Bax experienced the high life on BBC One documentary Supersized Earth, working on a ledge at the top of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Gettens added “explosions and bullets whizzing around people’s heads” to BBC One’s D-Day the Last Heroes.

Emma Penny has mixed sound for ITN, working on huge outside broadcasts such as the VE Day Celebrations. Louise Willcox has supervised sound recording on Springwatch and Question Time. They came together to deliver a session on sound recording at our 2016 Student Craft Skills Masterclasses.
This point was made by the two veterans delivering an RTS Craft Skills Masterclass on sound, Chris Ashworth, Production Sound Mixer, and Mike Felton, Sound Designer.
“You only get shouted at when things go wrong,” Felton observed. “Sound is a masochist’s job. Basically you do it for your own satisfaction.”
Chair Carolyn Reynolds pointed out that sound is a job for perfectionists. The two sound supremos seemed to agree but appeared too modest to acknowledge their precise contribution to the success – or otherwise – of a programme.

Simon Clark is a sound recordist who specialises in TV drama; his credits include the forthcoming BBC adaptation of Wolf Hall and the Sky 1 thriller Mad Dogs.
