Sky News recently covered the Presidential elections in Afghanistan with a special week of reporting.
After the Sky teams pulled out on Friday 21st August, Head of Foreign News for Sky, Adrian Wells, said: “It’s been a huge effort for Sky News to mount such extensive coverage in a country as challenging as Afghanistan. Everyone is delighted with the results.”
But what are the challenges of involved of broadcasting so extensively for a sustained period of time from one of the world’s most hostile environments?
What technical difficulties have to be overcome to deliver live content in 40+ degree heat from the middle of a primitive army base in the Afghan desert in summer, where even basics like running water and washing facilities are almost non-existent?
Or a bombed out capital city often resembling a war zone?
And how do you ensure that content is delivered seamlessly from those locations on Sky News’ many platforms including on TV, radio, online, an iPhone app and on giant screens at train stations?
And finally how do you keep your people safe in such an environment, ensuring that they can deliver the true story of the election against a background of threats by the Taliban against those who turned out to vote – and therefore, by default, against those journalists who might be filming or monitoring that vote?.
