My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding was a one off film in Channel Four's award winning Cutting Edge Strand.
Hear how the programme was recommissioned as a five part series that offers a window into the surprising secretive world of gypsies and travellers in Britain.
The new series follows the extraordinary rite-of-passage events - including weddings, communions and christenings - to offer a window into the world of the gypsy and traveler community. Each episode gives insights into the community's attitudes toward gender roles, education and outsiders. The series also explores the remarkable rituals, traditions and beliefs held by this minority group.
The team had to gain the trust of the subjects of their documentary - many of whom did not want to be identified - all proud of their traditions. With each episode being a stand alone subject - we will find out the logistics and issues of shooting and editing to a tight time scale. And then reflect on the stunning audience figures (9 Million average) that it has attracted particularly with the young adults - and its last episode out rated "The Brits" on ITV.
