MAM or Multi-MAM – Media Asset Management today - what is it and why do you need it?

When Media Asset Management started in the late-nineties it felt like an opportunity to create joined-up broadcasting: technology enabling integrated sharing of media and metadata through the lifecycle. Today it is more typical to see systems focussed on a section of the workflow, such as production, play-out or archive. Is this a technology issue, or because of the way people work? Are multiple MAM Silos better than Enterprise MAM? Is it better to buy or build the underlying technology? What lessons can be learned from MAM owners from different stages of the media lifecycle?

Niall Duffy has over 20 years experience in media and entertainment, with deep expertise in digital workflows and the impact of transformational technology. He specialises in pragmatic strategic analysis and innovation, covering the development of practical technology strategies, business case development and commercial, technical and project assurance. Niall was previously the founder and Chairman of Mediasmiths International, the EMEA Broadcast Solutions team at IBM and work in Media & Entertainment consultancy at Arthur D. Little and Arthur Andersens.
David Hornsby is the Product Owner of ITV's Content Delivery systems, over the past 18 months he has been working with the Content Delivery Modernisation team and partners to transform ITV's content workflows. Before the project was initiated 100% of ITV's broadcast deliveries were made on video tape. Now, post the DPP file delivery day ITV have successfully in sourced 100% of their transcoding, have introduced an end to end workflow engine and asset management system and reduced their tape based deliveries to transmission to around 10%.
Mark Forsythe joined Sky in 1995 and currently holds the role of Production Workflow Manager for Sky Sports. His primary responsibility is to manage the day to day impact of file based workflows on production and delivery. Previously Mark, a two time Olympian, worked at BBC Northern Ireland as a presenter and reporter before joining Sky Sports as an Assistant Producer working on Rugby League, progressing to Executive Producer Tennis and Athletics before being seconded to Sports Operations to assist with the roll-out of Sky’s Tapeless Programme across Sky Sports.
Louis Matignon is Head of Media Management Service Line at Ericsson Broadcast and Media services..He is a pre-sales manager and solution architect with worldwide experience in the broadcast industry designing and delivering end to end Media Asset Management and news workflows.
Chris Wood, is Director of Systems and Enterprise Culture, Harper Collins. He has extensive experience and achievements architecting and managing multiple complex software projects and programmes in the broadcast media industry.
