Loudness Explained

Program loudness has become an increasing concern around the world, with the junction between programs and commercials causing discomfort and annoyance to viewers. This has led in some cases for countries to legislate for loudness compliance, and where no such legislation is place, broadcasters are opting for self-regulated loudness compliance. So far the US has, since the passing of the CALM Act, implemented the ATSC 85 standard. Japan has the ARIB TR32 standard, and across Europe, broadcasters are implementing the EBU’s R128 recommendations. Pending consideration of how best to implement a timescale of their own loudness regulation, UK broadcasters and post production companies are finding themselves facing rejection of file-based content from international clients already bound by loudness regulation.

MC Patel of Emotion Systems will host this lecture and discuss the loudness regulation minefield, as well as file-based content compliance.
