Join the RTS on Tuesday 19 January for this exclusive In Conversation with Asa Butterfield event, hosted by Caroline Frost. 

Star of Netflix's Sex Education, Asa will join us to discuss the show and his wider career. 

 

Asa Butterfield:

Asa Butterfield is a young British actor who has established an impressive film and TV portfolio. 

Asa made his on-screen debut aged 8 in AFTER THOMAS (2006), in 2007 he featured in the comedy film SON OF RAMBOW alongside Will Poulter. The following year Asa made his breakout performance, playing the lead in the film adaptation of the John Baynes novel of the same name THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS for which he was nominated for an Independent Film Award.

In the title role, Asa starred in the Martin Scorsese directed adventure drama film HUGO (2011). Hugo received critical acclaim and received 11 academy award nominations (including best picture), winning five, it was also nominated for eight Bafta’s, winning two and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards.

Asa most recently returned to our screen as Otis in the second season of the Netflix worldwide phenomenon, SEX EDUCATION. The coming of age comedy also starring Gillian Anderson is due to return for a third Season later this year.  

Last year Asa featured in the horror anthology series, 50 STATES OF FRIGHTS.The plot will follow stories based on urban legends and folktales from around the U.S. Released on the streaming platform Quibi, Asa starred  alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Christina Ricci.

2019 saw Asa return to the big screen in GREED alongside an all-star cast including Steve Coogan and Isla FisherSet in Mykonos, Greece the premise is a satire on wealth, with the plot centred around a billionaire’s 60th birthday. He also starred in the animation, WATCH THE SKIES. The family film follows the intergalactic exploits of St’aar (Butterfield), an alien teenager who runs away from his galaxy on a small star ship and ends up stranded on Earth.

In October of 2018, Asa starred alongside Sophie Turner in the romantic comedy TIME FREAK. Earlier in the same year, Asa played the lead alongside an exciting cast that included Maisie Williams and Nina Dobrev in THEN CAME YOU, the plot follows a hypochondriac working as an airport baggage handler who is forced to confront his fears when a British teenager with a terminal illness enlists him to help her carry out her eccentric bucket list.

An illustrious British boarding school becomes a bloody battleground when a mysterious sinkhole appears at a nearby fracking site unleashing unspeakable horror in SLAUGHTERHOUSE RULEZ (2018). Asa played Willoughby Blake alongside an all-star cast that includes, Margot Robbie, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg.

War Drama JOURNEY’S END (2017) saw Asa play the character 2nd Lieutenant Raleigh, he starred alongside Stephen Graham and Sam Claflin.  Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, Journey’s End follows the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, as they await their fate.

2017 proved a busy year, with Asa playing the lead in A BRILLIANT YOUNG MIND Asa portrayed a socially awkward teenage math prodigy who finds new confidence and new friendships when he lands a spot on the British squad at the International Mathematics Olympiad. In the same year, Asa starred in the out of this world THE SPACE BETWEEN US as Gardner Elliott, the first human born on Mars travels to Earth.

In ENDERS GAME (2013) Asa starred as Ender Wiggin who is recruited by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, an insectoid alien race who had previously tried to invade Earth and had inflicted heavy losses on humankind. He starred alongside Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley and Viola Davies. 

The Tim Burton directed fantasy adventure drama MS PEREGRINS HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN (2016) saw Asa as ‘Jacob’ alongside Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench. When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time, he finds Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Asa starred in the adventure film NANNY MCPHEE RETURNS (2010) a sequel to the hugely successful 2005 feature film Nanny McPhee. It was adapted by Emma Thompson from Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda books.

Asa’s extensive Film and TV credits also include: WRONG PLACE RIGHT TIM (SHORT) (2018), THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO (2017), THE HOUSE OF TOMORROW (2017), 10,000 SAINTS (2015), THE WOLF MAN(2010), MERLIN (2008), ASHES TO ASHES (2008), AFTER THOMAS (2006).
