So-called ‘structure from motion’ allows drones to capture the real world at a level of detail way beyond conventional videography. Now the VFX industry is waking up to the potential for drones in streamlining the vastly time-consuming business of recreating landscapes and buildings in a CGI world. Michael Surcombe explores some of the possibilities in this area, and he also surveys the current state of drones in the TV business.
Michael worked for the BBC for almost 20 years, mainly as a producer in factual and music programming. In 2013 he became BBC Wales' first Innovation Lead and set up the in-house aerial filming unit. In 2015 he set up his own company, Leaping Wing, specialising in aerial filming and other forms of data capture from the air. He has filmed regularly for BBC News, Countryfile, Coast and other documentary series. More recently he also worked on the prime-time drama A Very English Scandal. Michael also trains drone operators from across the industry, including some of the Blue Planet team.
