Event Summary

Coding and Mux - the thing that happens to a TV signal after it has left the playout and before it gets to the transmitter- has gone through great changes in the 11 years since the UK launched Digital Television.

In preparation for Digital Switch Over on terrestrial and HD on Satellite, Siemens have been totally changing the way in which the BBC digital channels with all Regional and National variants are handled. This is not a simple job in any case and took major changes to the plan when it was decided that PSB 3 should carry HD signals from 2 December 2009. There are over 20 different versions of the BBC DTT Muxes and an ever changing line up on DSAT - all transitioned to the new systems with minimal viewer impact.

Siemens also provides the CSI / EPG data for the whole of DTT (for DMOL) and Freesat will as without this a STB cannot "tune" to the "Channel".

This evening's event looks at the BBC requirements; the collaboration and how the facilities were designed built and are operated. .
