3D “Stereoscopic” Television as currently available is actually just a sub-set of the possible ways that television displays can add depth to the image. In this talk, the various ways these technologies enable the 3D experience will be explained, along with some of the pitfalls and potential problems that are faced when trying to implement such a system. How the human eyes and brain interact with the display will also be considered.
The talk will also briefly touch on some of the possible delivery methods for stereoscopic TV, and some of the issues facing someone asked to make a 3D TV programme.
Speaker Richard Salmon is a Senior Research Engineer at the BBC’s R&D South Lab, now based at Centre House, in West London. He is chairman of the EBU project group on Production Displays, which has produced a specification for the use of flat panel displays in TV production environments, and guidance to consumer display manufacturers on how the broadcasters expect the TV display to present their broadcast images. He is also active in the UK Digital TV Group (DTG), and is a member of the Society for Information Display (SID), the SMPTE and the IET.
Please note that the talk will be at Kingston in Austin Court and will start at 7pm. It will be preceded by a buffet starting at 6pm.
