RTS SOUTHERN CENTRE PROFESSIONAL AWARD CATEGORIES 2020

Once again we are inviting entries for our annual Professional Awards that celebrate the very best of the talent we have in the Southern Region.

 

 

Entry Requirements:

Entrants (companies or individuals) must be based in the Southern Region. However, the filming or production of the entries can happen outside of the Southern Region. 

All entries must have been produced between January and 31st December 2019.

The Southern Region is defined as Dorset, Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, West Sussex, Surrey, East Sussex, Kent, Essex and the Channel Islands.

Unless otherwise stated all awards refer to professional work in all screen media including Regional TV, Network TV, Local TV, Online, Training, and Exhibition films for the Corporate Sector , and newspaper and magazine screen output.

Please also note our two new categories – Sports Journalist and Specialised Audience Programme. We have also revised VJ Journalist award to Self-Shooter, and Factual Entertainment is now a series not a single programme award.

HOW TO ENTER 

Productions and paperwork for Categories 1-10 should be submitted on-line.  

Longer form productions covered by Categories 11-16 should be submitted on USB.

CRAFT Awards

1) Camerawork
A Portfolio Entry – Open for all camera operators based in the region who are asked to submit three examples of their work. Maximum length for all three examples ten minutes.

2) Graphics/Animation 
A Portfolio Entry – Open to all graphic designers based in the region. Entrants should submit a portfolio of three items – maximum length for each item is five minutes.

3) Post-Production
A Portfolio Entry – Open to all professional editors based in the region who are asked to submit a portfolio of three examples of their work - maximum length for all three examples ten minutes.

NEWS Awards 

4) Regional TV Journalist 
A Portfolio Entry – Open to all professional broadcast journalists in the region who are asked to submit three complete regional broadcast items to include a live or as live piece, an item of general interest and a special report produced “on-rota”. Maximum length of all three items – twelve minutes. 

5) Regional Special Feature Journalist
An opportunity for regional journalists to submit a single “off-rota” piece where they have been able to research and present an item of special interest. Maximum of 10 minutes. 

6) Regional Self Shooter
A Portfolio Entry – Open to professional journalists providing material for broadcast TV and/or online that they have shot themselves. This award is designed to recognise the very specific challenges and opportunities presented by self-shooting. Entrants must provide details of the extent of their involvement in the production of each finished piece. Maximum length for three examples is twelve minutes.  

7) Strand within a News or Magazine Programme 
A Portfolio Entry, this category is for linked strands made for News or Magazine programmes either regional or network. (e.g. a short series which has been produced for a magazine or series of programmes). Up to three items can submitted. The total duration of all three should not exceed fifteen minutes.

8) Sports Journalist 
A brand-new category for individuals working with sports content. A portfolio entry reflecting the very best broadcast TV/online sport coverage produced within the region. We are looking for excellence above and beyond the standard match report, with engaging presentation and an approach that works for the die-hard fans as well as a more general audience. Maximum length for up to three examples is twelve minutes.

GENERAL Awards

9) On-Screen Newcomers 
A Portfolio Entry of up to three examples of work, open to all professionals working in a presentation role within the industry. All entrants must have been working on screen for no more than 2 years as of January 2016 - maximum length ten minutes for up to three examples.

10) Specialised Audience Production
This category replaces non-broadcast and online categories and is intended to promote the growing excellence in producing professional content for a more specialised audience in a wide range of media environments. For example this could include; video podcasts, interactive content or short web films; or screen media for exhibition, training and education. Entrants should submit a complete programme or project along with a brief explaining the use and purpose of the content.

11) Single Documentary or Factual Programme
This category is intended to reward the excellence in current affairs, factual and documentary programming made within the region. This must be a one-off episode, not part of a series. The programme should be submitted with a production brief setting out the aims and production challenges.

12) Factual Entertainment Series
This must be a programme example of an entertainment series made within the region. The programme should be submitted with a production brief setting out the aims and production challenges. Normally one complete programme typical of the series should be submitted.

13) Factual Series
This category is intended to reward the excellence in popular factual programming made in the region.  One episode must be submitted along with the production brief.  Normally one complete programme typical of the series would be submitted.

15) Regional News Magazine Programme
A single entry for the best standard edition of a regionally broadcast television or on-line news magazine programme. We are looking for the Editor’s choice of a standard “on the day” edition of the programme to be selected from a specified month within the year and which represents the very best in regional news. The month for this year is SEPTEMBER.

16) Special Event Coverage by a Regional News Magazine Programme
A single entry featuring the coverage of a special event, anniversary or reaction to breaking news carried out within the time slot of a regional news magazine programme. Again we are looking for the Editor’s choice of an edition of a regional magazine showing innovation and creativity in covering material beyond the usual purview of the programme.
