RTS East Anglia Awards 1999

Awards '99 was celebrated at a gala evening at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, Norwich on Saturday 13th November 1999 hosted by Nicholas Parsons and Amanda Redington. Awards '99 is the fifth Awards event organised by the RTS East Anglia Centre, the previous events being held in 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998. This year eleven awards were made to recognise excellence in a wide range of programme-making expertise from reporting to production craft design.

Steve HubbardThe Judges were impressed with the general quality of the entries and two were outstanding. Steve Corkett showed considerable imagination and the winner showed great versatility, immediacy and creativity; he was Steve Hubbard.

The Mike Read Award is named in honour of Anglia's distinguished Controller of News and loyal supporter of this Centre. It goes to the best newcomer to television journalism, that is to someone who has had less than 3 years experience in the medium.

Lucy AlexanderTwo outstanding newcomers with different approaches emerged from the field. The Judges thought James Blatch had authority and strong journalistic values. The winner showed even greater versatility and an ease of presentation remarkable in a newcomer. By the closest of margins the winner was Lucy Alexander.

Roger BuntingThe overall quality of the entries was impressive. The smaller production companies offered strong competition to the larger organisations and in a very closely run finish, One Man's Vision from Jane Scarfe was just beaten by The SIRUS Project from Roger Bunting.

Paul BakerThe diversity of the individual crafts in this category made comparisons difficult and the quality of most of the entries was disappointing. However, several of them were good and the best was in the craft discipline of Scriptwriting from the winner, Paul Baker.

Alex DunlopThe Judges were impressed by the breadth of capabilities of the entrants, although they would have liked to have seen more evidence of off-diary journalism generating exclusive stories. Nevertheless there were strong individual performances notably from Greg Milam and Alex Dunlop. The Tony Scase Award for News Reporter of the Year went to Alex Dunlop of BBC East.
