Tuesday

Black Sails

History, 10pm

Toby Stephens plays the fearsome Captain Flint in this tale of piracy on the ocean waves.

As new recruit John Silver joins Flint’s crew, the captain must prevent a mutiny breaking out on his ship.

Created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, the series is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and is set roughly two decades before the novel begins

 

 

Wednesday

Escape from ISIS

Channel 4, 10pm

Amid the horrors inflicted by Isis, producers Edward Watts and Evan Williams have focused on the incredible work of an underground network rescuing kidnapped women from the minority Yazidi religion.

Talking to families of the captured women, and those that have been rescued, at times this is a harrowing watch.

However the work of people like lawyer Khaleel al-Dakhi to reunite families makes for a deeply touching piece of television.

Thursday

Coast

BBC Two, 9pm

Plastic waste, seaweed and salmon are just some of the things being explored in this week’s Coast, which looks at bounty from the sea.

Archaeologist Mark Horton finds out why people in the Stone Age fished at night, while artist Fran Crowe looks at how the plastic rubbish that washes up on the Suffolk coast can be used in art.

 

Friday

First Night of the Proms

BBC Two, 8pm

The BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo returns for the First Night of the Proms from the Royal Albert Hall for an evening celebrating 150 years since the birth of composers Carl Nielsen and Jean Sibelius.

Saturday

The Ruby in the Smoke

Drama, 6pm

Billie Piper plays archetypal heroine Sally Lockhart in this adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novel.

Brought up by her father, Lockhart is a whiz with a pistol, can ride a horse like a pro and, as if that wasn’t enough, is really good at accounting, all of which comes in handy when her father dies in odd circumstances. Lockhart must depend on her skills and her new friends to survive.

First broadcast in 2006, this classic tale of mystery and adventure makes for excellent Saturday evening viewing, and features an all-star cast including Matt Smith as cockney dreamer Jim, and Julie Walters as the sinister Mrs Holland.
