RTS WEST OF ENGLAND STUDENT AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED
The winners of the RTS West of England Student Awards have been announced at an awards ceremony at The Everyman Cinema in Bristol. The region had received the highest ever number of entries across a range of categories including drama, animation, short form, comedy and entertainment and factual. At the ceremony, students heard from Mike Gunton, Creative Director Factual and Natural History Unit, BBC Studios who shared his insights on creative storytelling in factual television and how to engage with audiences.
The University of Gloucestershire won two programme awards, in Factual and Comedy and Entertainment. In Factual, for ‘Memories of Mother’, a poetic documentary about a mother which the judges praised as ‘a brave film’ and ‘beautifully shot and edited’ and in Comedy and Entertainment for ‘Delicious Love’, a bitter sweet love story, which the judges thought was ‘so well visualised and supported by an excellent script’. ‘Dearly Departed’, another project from the University of Gloucestershire was highly commended in Comedy and Entertainment as an ‘outstanding and beautifully executed musical which was so well realised and highly original.’
Two programme awards also went to the University of the West of England. The winner in Animation was ‘Earthly Delights’, a film by Efa Blosse Mason which impressed the judges as it was ‘quirky, creative and funny’ whilst ‘Nose’ in Short Form was ‘deceptively simple and very engaging’.
Bath Spa University triumphed in the Drama category with horror film ‘Figurehead’ which the judges thought had ‘a great understanding of genre rules and structures and was well written and well acted.’
The judges were Alison Sterling, Drama Producer, Reuben Armstrong, Filmmaker, Andrew Wilson, Re-recording Mixer, Red Six Ltd, Vicky Brophy, Head of Production, Wonky Films, Tim Ruffle, Director, Aardman, Lucy Bilson, Production Executive, Plimsoll Productions, Elizabeth White, Producer/Director, BBC Natural History Unit, Ric de Mowbray, MD, Sound Town, Barry Hecker, Executive Producer, Rowan Musgrave, Producer, True to Nature, Charlotte Gay, Production Journalist, ITV News West Country. Judges were looking for freshness, originality and audience appeal.
The winning films from the West of England Centre will now be judged at the UK national level in April 2019.
