WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT RTS WEST OF ENGLAND TELEVISION AWARDS in association with Evolutions Bristol
David Olusoga awarded Sir Ambrose Fleming cup for outstanding achievement in television

The Royal Television Society West of England Awards in association with Evolutions Bristol took place on Sunday 2nd October at Bristol Old Vic with a gala ceremony hosted by actress and stand up comedian Jayde Adams. The television community of the West of England turned out in force to celebrate their work over the last year.

Guests included actors Gamba Cole and Darren Boyd (The Outlaws), Fern Britton, Ashwika Kapur, Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees, actors Celine Buckens and Tracy Ifeachor (Showtrial).

Stephen Merchant’s comedy thriller The Outlaws won two awards, in Scripted and for Gamba Cole for his portrayal of club doorman Christian, in On Screen Talent - Performance. The judges described Bristol born Cole’s performance as “undoubtedly a breakout role, effortless and authentic with real depth of character”

The Sir Ambrose Fleming Memorial Award is the RTS West of England’s special award for outstanding and enduring contribution to television in the region. This year journalist, author, TV presenter and historian David Olusoga was awarded the silver cup. Presented by Marvin Rees, Bristol’s Mayor, David was described as a  “figurehead in the industry who has shone a light on the long-standing issues of poor representation within the screen industries and who understands the power of film and tv to convey the most important stories of our times.”

Paralympic sprinter Jonnie Peacock impressed the judges to win On Screen Talent: Presenter for his work on Jonnie’s Blade Camp mentoring five young amputees. The Factual award went to Unknown Amazon with Pedro Andrade from Icon Films, The Dog House (Five Mile Films) won in Factual Entertainment and Features and Adam Wishart’s powerful documentary 9/11: Inside the President’s War Room championed in Documentary.

In News, BBC Points West won in both News Journalist, for Andrew Plant and in News Story for their report which investigated and uncovered flawed Covid testing in the region.

Lynn Barlow, Chair of RTS West of England and Assistant Vice-Chancellor Creative and Cultural Industries Engagement, UWE said “‘The awards are a great reflection of how impressive our production companies and amazing productions teams are. With bold ideas and some of the best talent in the UK, they continue to make programmes loved by audiences around the world.”
