There’s work across the fields of on screen talent, craft, scripted, regional television news and a range of factual programming including natural history and documentary.
The RTS West of England Awards is the only annual celebration of the region’s creative community and this year we are again delighted to include the work from our sister centre, RTS Devon and Cornwall.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gorilla as our new title sponsor this year and would like to thank them for their support. As a post-production facility, they provide opportunities which actively support and nurture new and diverse entrants to mould our future industry. This aligns with a key ambition of the RTS and supports our work here in the region”. said Rachel Drummond-Hay, RTS West of England Chair and MD of Drummer Television.
BBC Studios Natural History Unit leads the way with nine nominations for a variety of projects and associated
craft categories. Plimsoll Productions has five nominations for A Real Bug’s Life, which takes viewers into an unseen micro-universe using the latest cameras and scientific revelations.
BBC drama Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light scoops five nominations: the series follows Thomas Cromwell picking his way through the wreckage of Anne Boleyn’s death to take his place as principal councillor to King Henry VIII. Other scripted projects nominated include BBC comedy drama Boarders, and Truelove from Clerkenwell Films alongside Rivals, adapted from Jilly Cooper’s novel of the same name, which depicts the drama and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, in the ruthless world of independent television. All these nominated projects were based at The Bottle Yard Studios and supported by Bristol Film Office.
The On-Screen Talent category sees wildlife biologist and broadcaster Liz Bonnin, and wildlife cinematographer Anna Dimitriadis go up against former Royal Marine Arthur Williams (Defending Europe) and ITV News West Country presenter Ellie Barker.
In Documentary, four compelling projects are nominated including: Billy and Molly - An Otter Love Story - which is a heart-warming story of love between a wild otter and a man set in the remote Scottish islands of Shetland; Lucan - which follows one man’s hunt for the truth about the murder of Sandra Rivett; To Catch a Copper - which unearths shocking cases of corrupt officers in Avon and Somerset Police; and Strike! The Women Who Fought Back - the story of six women from the South Wales valleys and how they helped sustain the bitter year-long miners’ strike.
In News, ITV News West Country has four nominations across News Journalist and Story, with BBC equalling four nominations across its news outlets in the South West.
The RTS West of England Awards will take place on the evening of Sunday 27th April at the Bristol Old Vic.
