Take That frontman Gary Barlow is seen roadtripping his way through South Africa in a new ITV series made by a small Plymouth indie.

Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa celebrates the singer’s “love of wine, good food and great friendships”, taking him through vineyards from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

Last month, RTS Devon and Cornwall held a premiere at the Everyman cinema in Plymouth, followed by a Q&A with executive producers David Nottage and Charlotte Davis from Rock Oyster Media.

The indie is a food-show powerhouse and relished working with Barlow. “We received a call from ITV saying they had a ‘big talent’ looking to shoot a series, and when we heard it was Gary Barlow we were left speechless,” revealed Nottage.

“At first, he was a little apprehensive as this series is very close to his heart, but we all fell in love with each other pretty quickly, and you can see that on screen in Gary’s humour and enthusiasm.”

In a message sent from his dressing room moments before performing in Prague, Barlow said he was thrilled to be involved with the series: “Me and the Rock Oyster team had so much fun making it and we are super-proud of what we have all achieved.”

On top of this, he also sent bottles of his latest wines to sample. “Please everybody, sit back, have a glass of wine on us and enjoy it,” he said.

Davis said that filming was no holiday for Barlow, but rather an education. “Gary was extremely keen to get stuck in and learn as much as he could about the wine-making process. This has been one of his lifelong ambitions. So we made sure he got the full experience.”

While on his travels, Barlow squashes grapes with his bare feet in a barrel along with his friend Ben Shephard, the TV presenter. He also visits a rural community with long-time music friend Mica Paris.

Nottage revealed that Rock Oyster was “hoping to film more travel series with Gary, which may even feature the rest of the band on tour”.

The RTS Devon and Cornwall event was produced by Jane Hudson.
