HDTV

On the 1st of February to a packed house in BBC Birmingham Ian Nichol from JVC presented an accurate and thought provoking talk on the present state of HDTV and where he thought it was going.

The battle between progressive and interlace was featured together with the display requirements to achieve true HDTV. Using recorded images shot in HD and SD quite a few questions were raised which was which considering the equipment being used to display.

The dangers of compression were covered in some details and the effects on HD. Broadcasters were cautioned that viewers having the knowledge of HD quality from transmissions and especially off DVD. The downgrading of bandwidth will not be acceptable to the viewer. There was also a word of caution on the expression HD READY, all this equipment must be of a set line to work correctly. It will be interesting to watch the World Cup this year, it will be covered in HDTV.
