Happy Valley last aired in 2016, and speaking to Radio Times earlier this year, Sally Wainwright confirmed that the new series will jump time accordingly, taking place seven years after the events of the last.

In one image, Sarah Lancashire can be seen making her final outing as Sergeant Catherine Cawood, sporting a bloody nose after a police raid.

In another, James Norton is back as her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce, the estranged father of her grandson now serving time for multiple offences, including a triple murder. Tommy's sat in his prison cell with a radically different look.

Siobhan Finneran stars as Catherine's sister Clare and her grandson Ryan is played once again by Rhys Connah.

Also returning are Happy Valley favourites Ishia Bennison as Joyce, Shane Zaza as Shaf, Chord Melodic as Sledge, and Mete Dursun as Gorkem. They join the previously announced Con O’Neill, George Costigan, Charlie Murphy, Derek Riddell, Karl Davies, Susan Lynch, Rick Warden, Vincent Franklin, Amit Shah, Mark Stanley, and Mollie Winnard.

Oliver Huntingdon (The Rising), Jack Bandeira (Sex Education), Alec Secareanu (God’s Own Country), and Anthony Flanagan (Gentleman Jack) will join the cast for the first time.

Series three re-joins Catherine on the cusp of retirement, so exhausted is she by the never-ending war on drugs in the valley.

When she discovers the remains of a gang-related murder victim in a drained reservoir, the case unwittingly leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce.

Meanwhile her grandson Ryan is now 16 and still living with her, and although she refuses to acknowledge Tommy as his father, he has ideas of his own about what kind of relationship he wants to have with the convict.

Patrick Harkins and Sally Wainwright, and Fergus O'Brien, are directing series three, while Jessica Taylor is producing.
