Netflix subscribers can now download programmes as well as stream at no extra cost

Netflix members worldwide are now able to download series to watch offline and on-the-go, and at no extra cost to the subscriber.

Many series and films, such as Orange is The New BlackNarcos and The Crown are already available for download, with more on the way.

The company explained that the change came due to massive customer demand. Rival streaming service Amazon Prime enabled a similar feature recently.

A spokesperson for the company said that "While many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we’ve often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where Internet is expensive or limited."

This indicates something of a U-turn for the platform. Netflix's Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt said at a a Download option may actually serve to dissuade users from using the streaming platform because it provided them with too much choice.

To start downloading shows and films, viewers must ensure the Netflix app is upgraded to the most recent version.

Users of the Netflix app can now browse 'Available for Download' titles to store on your device.
