Strictly Come Dancing winner and former EastEnders actor Rose Ayling-Ellis will portray deaf hospital worker Alison Woods in a new police drama for ITV.
Ayling-Ellis won the dancing competition during her stint as Frankie Lewis in EastEnders, the first ever deaf character in the soap. She also helped launch a deaf Barbie doll late last year.
She is now getting back to work on the small screen. Code of Silence follows Alison (Ayling-Ellis), who is struggling to get by working in a police canteen and a local bar whilst caring for her mother, who is also hearing-impaired.
Things move fast. Morphing into a police drama, Alison is thrown into a pulsating world of law and order after the police ask her to help lip read conversations between dangerous criminals.
During the investigation, Alison finds herself drawn to Liam, one of the main suspects in the case. As her work and personal life become blurred, she will have to choose between the two.
Code of Silence is written by Catherine Moulton (Baptiste), who worked in TV drama development and production before making the move into screenwriting. Moulton took part in the 4Screenwriting course and was on the reputable BBC TV Writersroom Programme in 2020.
She said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to combine my love of tense, twisty thrillers with my experience of lip reading and hearing loss, and all in a show for ITV.”
Rose Ayling-Ellis said: “I first read Catherine Moulton’s script it was obvious that her first-hand experiences and understanding has enabled her to write a truly authentic character and I knew I had to be a part of this project.”
The show will be produced by Tom Leggett (Grime Kids) and Damien Timmer (Endeavour) for Mammoth Screen alongside Moulton.
Code of Silence is expected to start filming later in 2023.
