The Republic of Ireland Centre entered the Halloween spirit with a screening of I Created Dracula at the end of October. Film-maker Ian Graham then answered questions about his 1994 film for RTÉ One.
Graham, who was talking at RTÉ Television Centre in Dublin, explained that the documentary explored the life and times of the gothic writer, looking at what inspired the Irishman to create the classic vampire character in his 1897 novel, Dracula.
“I made this film about a Dubliner who created an international character, but who himself appeared to be obscure,” said Graham.
“He had been eclipsed by his own creation, Count Dracula, so it was interesting to explore Stoker’s complex life, and show his various accomplishments, beyond the famous book.”
The film also focuses on Stoker’s work at London’s Lyceum Theatre, where he was the business manager, and his relationship with the celebrated actors, Henry Irving and Ellen Terry.
Graham’s other films number James Plunkett, Conscience of a City and James Joyce: The Trial of Ulysses.
