The great Tube editor has died in London, it's understood from lung cancer.  He was 57.  As well as editing and directing The Tube, he was editor of 'Beatles Anthology', producer of the Album Chart Show  and latterly documenter of Iron Maiden.

To me Andy was a true master of his craft W he was the son of the partner in prominent West End film and cinema PR business, Kent Matthews.  He would tell me stories of cutting Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron in Soho as he sat in the Tube edit suite where I worked with him from 1982-7.  Andy's 'Jack the Lad' persona concealed an incredible capacity to visualise music and performance W both as promos or in concert performances.  Remember, he began cutting film on giant Steenbeck machines, and straddled the revolution that we now know as tape and electronic editing as standard.
Andy was inextricably part of Geoff Wonfor's anarchic Tube film style W he was the only choice when Geoff went onto helm the landmark Beatles Anthology for ITV in the 1990s.  Andy received a Grammy for the Beatles Anthology, plus 2 Emmy nominations and numerous RTS Awards.
Andy edited my first documentary as a producer in 1987 W Joan Armatrading - Acoustic W and I had a wonderful time recruiting bands for his tribute band series Cover Their Tracks when he supplied Tyne Tees TV with a regional series.
Andy inevitably became a gifted and honoured director W it is eternal tribute to him that recently uber-rockers Iron Maiden loved him enough to trust him to document their globetrotting exploits... this was based around his golfing friendship with drummer Nicko McBrain.  After all, Andy looked like a rockstar W and he knew it!  His laconic tones will be sadly missed.

From Sandy Tyler:
I am deeply shocked to learn of the tragic news that Andy Matthews is no longer with us.  He was a special person whom I had the pleasure of sharing eight great years working alongside.  He was always a happy lovable guy as well as a great editor/director... it was my pleasure to have spent that valuable time with him.  My thoughts are with his family and friends.
R.I.P. Andy
