In the North East and the Borders region, there is a generation of newcomers to the industry who are proving themselves with exceptionally high standards of work — particularly behind the camera. This award recognises an individual who has demonstrated the desire, skill and determination to go right to the top in the industry. They’re already excelling, despite having less than two years of industry experience, and they deserve to be recognised. The nominee might be a writer who has had their first network commission aired — they might be in their first film editor job — they might be in the early stages of a news production career or they might be showing real talent behind the scenes in a TV drama. This is a broad category and the nominee and/or their senior manager must be able to demonstrate why they are already considered to be a 'rising star' and why they are likely to make a big impact on the industry in future.

The panel only accepted written nominations of between 500 and 1000 words in this category — the individual must be nominated by a colleague and the entry must be endorsed by the nominee’s senior manager.

This Award recognises the emergence of a significant new talent in UK production. The Judges wanted to know what makes this individual stand out? Why will they go right to the top? Why are they valued by their team? The judges considered the personal impact and the recognition of that impact during the awards year.

The judges recognised their skills and talents are emerging, and wanted to see evidence of extensive contributions to a team effort, demonstrating newly-learned skills, creativity, innovation, professionalism and bags of potential. An enthusiasm for the sector and the region was considered by the judges.

The nominees were:

Nicholas Waterton – Arcus Animation Studio
Philippa Goymer – BBC North East & Cumbria

Guest Presenters: Rachel Teate ('Wolfblood' and 'Boy Meets Girl') and Prof Julie Mennell (University of Cumbria)
