The North East and the Border is home to high achieving producers who are not always making programmes for broadcast. The RTS wants to recognise the wide range of productions made here for specific target audiences (e.g. private or public sector clients, communities or educational groups).
The Judges were looking for quality in every aspect of the production and wanted to know what kind of impact was made by the production. Entrants were asked to be clear about the target audience, and to say why the production stands out — perhaps it created headlines, or maybe audiences said this film made them take action or change their mind about a current issue.
The nominees were:
The George Elmy – Blast Beach Films
Ubisoft Reflections Recruitment Film – Future & Co
We Believe You – Meerkat Films
The Judges said:
The Best Non-Broadcast Factual category considers productions made for online and DVD release, and was a varied selection ranging from a 2-minute introduction to weddings for web and social media, to a 1 hour 23-minute documentary based on re-discovered footage of a concert raising money for sacked miners.
In fact, re-issued archive material formed a significant part of the category, which included important records of historic events, but there were other productions with a more direct topical message. The judges thought that The George Elmy, from Blast Beach Films, was an important record of Seaham’s worst sea tragedy, and the efforts which resulted in its old lifeboat being brought back to the town.
We Believe You, (by Meerkat Films) was a very subtle and effective introduction to the work of Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland, with some excellent visual moments.
And based on the fact that more than one judge said “It made me want to go and work there!”, the Recruitment Film made by Future & Co for Ubisoft Reflections was fresh, vibrant, creative… and very effective.
