A one-off episode of Horrible Histories focused on the Tower of London is to be aired in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the children’s comedy smash hit.
The new episode – ‘Terrifying Tower of London’ – was filmed on-location at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It follows Rattus Rattus as the beloved rodent teams up with AJ Clark, one of the Tower’s Beefeaters, officially known as Yeoman Warders. The two navigate every twist and turn of the Tower’s long history, from its being built by William the Conqueror all the way to the present day.
Along the way, viewers can expect to meet Walter Raleigh, Anne Boleyn, William Wallace, the Duke of Wellington and Winston Churchill. Henry VIII will also be on hand to go through his best executions in ‘Top of the Chops’, while a band of Beefeaters will perform a song about guarding the tower.
Horrible Histories has made stars out of its original cast. Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard – now working under the collective Them There – went on to create Yonderland, Bill and hit BBC sitcom Ghosts. The show has also seen appearances from comedy greats like Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder), Stephen Fry (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) and Dara Ó Briain (Mock the Week).
The show is based on the series of books by Terry Deary and illustrated by Martin Brown.
The one-off episode is available on BBC iPlayer on 16 April, and will air on CBBC on Friday 19 April.
