WHAT IS BLUE BUT SMELLS LIKE RED PAINT?

What did Virginia McLaurin achieve in 2016 that she’d waited 106 years to do?

Which popular BBC1 programme’s title is an anagram of “Vat on housewife orgy“?

Those are the sort of facts that you need at your fingertips to succeed in the North East & The Border Centre’s annual Review of the Year, held at Tyneside’s Live Theatre, where 10 teams battled with the obvious to the sublimye.

It helps if you’ve watched the ‘and finallys’ in news programmes during the year.  It also helps if you’ve got a sideways view of the world, like question-setters Carole and Tony Edwards, and Graeme Aldous.

The Brandy Snaps

And (l to r, with Carole & Tony Edwards) Gordon Telfer, Elaine Kennedy-Lee, Rupert Jones-Lee and Vicky Kennedy (collectively known as ‘The Brandy Snaps’) had what it took to take away the prestigious Alto Trophy (which this year, owing to an administrative error, was twice as impressive as usual).

So what is Blue, but smells like Red Paint?  Obvious, really…. Blue Paint!

106-year-old Virginia McLaurin got to realise her dream of meeting the President and First Lady of the USA, as she, Michelle and Barak Obama did a little dance together.  And doubtless Ian Hislop and Paul Merton would be ecstatic to know that “Vat on housewife orgy“ is an anagram of “Have I Got News For You”!

One more?  Who in 2016, after 80 years,  followed Jane Cain, Pat Simmons, Brian Cobby and Sara Mendes da Costa?

Well, as everyone knows, it’s Alan Steadman — the new (Scottish) voice of the BT Speaking Clock... precisely!

Happy New Year.

GRAEME ALDOUS.
