Genius Game
Wednesday
ITV1, 9.00pm
David Tennant (Doctor Who) has assembled Britain’s biggest brainboxes for a battle of wits like no other.
The reality game show will test not just the contestants’ IQ, but also their willingness to use the dark arts of manipulation. The challenges are specially designed to require multiple skills, amongst them a knack for scheming.
“Alliances will be built and broken. Friendships forged and destroyed. It’s brutal, and I can’t wait,” purrs a gleeful Tennant.
Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes
Wednesday
Disney+
In the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings in London, a follow-up attack was planned. Though it never came to fruition, a suspect was shot dead in broad daylight. As it turned out, though, Jean Charles de Menezes wasn’t who the Met thought he was.
This four-part dramatization tells the story of how an innocent Brazilian electrician came to be killed, and the disinformation that circulated afterwards.
The Eternaut
Wednesday
Netflix
Snow during Argentinian summer is weird enough, until the residents of Buenos Aires realise it kills anyone it touches. Before long, a band of survivors are left trying to stave off an alien invasion.
The series adapts the classic 1957 Argentinian graphic novel written by Héctor G. Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López. Oesterheld, a pioneer in Argentinian comics, was abducted by the country’s military junta in 1977, making him one of ‘los desaparecidos’, or ‘the disappeared’. His grandson, Martín M. Oesterheld, worked as a creative consultant on the series.
Taskmaster
Thursday
Channel 4, 9.00pm
Greg Davies returns to torment – sorry, aggressively encourage – five comedians as they compete for a golden bust of his head.
This time, Fatiha El-Ghorri (Live at the Apollo), Jason Mantzoukas (Parks and Recreation), Mathew Baynton (Ghosts), Rosie Ramsey and Stevie Martin (8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown) step up to the plate. All five are wonderfully talented, and promise to make Taskmaster as entertaining as ever. Alex Horne will also be there.
The Four Seasons
Thursday
Netflix
An impressive cast leads this TV remake of the 1981 film of the same name.
Tina Fey (30 Rock), Steve Carell (The Office), Will Forte (Scott Pilgrim Takes Off), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Kerri Kenney-Silver (Reno 911!) and Marco Calvani (High Tide) play six friends in need of a getaway. The three couples have known each other for years, but something is about to throw their decades-long dynamic off: one of the pairs are divorcing.
Malpractice
Sunday
ITV1, 9.00pm
The medical anthology series returns for its second outing.
Dr James Ford (Tom Hughes, The English) is the on-call Psychiatry Registrar when he has the shift from hell. A nervous mother’s postnatal check-up clashes with the sectioning of a psychotic patient, with a devastating outcome.
Soon, the Medical Investigation Unit start uncovering the facts, none of which show anyone in a particularly good light. In this hospital, it isn’t just Ford with secrets.
