The Heartstopper film is officially in production, meaning Kit Connor and Joe Locke have entered their dual roles as series leads and executive producers.
Heartstopper fans have followed Nick (Connor) and Charlie (Locke) as they’ve grown from two fifteen-year-olds with high-school crushes into a couple navigating real-world challenges.
In series three, their relationship grew and changed as Charlie came to terms with the reality of his mental health struggles and began treatment. This has come quite a way from their shy ‘hi’s’ in the school corridors, but can their high-school romance survive the leap into adulthood?
When we last saw them, they were preparing for their long-distance relationship. Nick is setting off to pursue his dreams at Leeds University, whilst Charlie begins his final school year.
Nick and Charlie aren’t the only characters who will struggle with this transition: Elle (Yasmin Finney, Doctor Who) and Tao (William Gao, Sunrise) only just managed to admit their feelings went beyond friendship, and now Elle might be heading to school in Europe. Although Tara (Corinna Brown, Essex Girls) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) aren’t dealing with the looming threat of separation, their relationship has entered a new era as Darcy begins sharing more about their past and experimenting with they/them pronouns.
The film will be released alongside the sixth instalment of creator Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, following the same plot. Locke and Connor will act as executive producers for the Heartstopper film, these new roles adding another feather to their already well-decorated caps. Both Locke and Conner have had successful Broadway runs in 2025, with Locke performing in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Connor in Romeo and Juliet.
Alice Oseman says of their new collaboration: “I’m very excited to work with Kit and Joe on solving the creative and logistical problems that always arise throughout production. I’ve always enjoyed hearing their thoughts and ideas about Heartstopper, and I’m hoping that we’ll have many more of those conversations now that we’re an exec team.”
The Heartstopper movie does not yet have a release date set, but will air on Netflix.
